  2. @Icyman – Win7 is only for the media center portion. This guide is for installing a vpn solution on ubuntu and perhaps it’s a bit out of date as technology is always moving forward. I’ll consider redoing it if there are enough comments asking for it.

    I did find this:
To Install the OpenVPN-AS package in Ubuntu or Debian you will need to run this command:
    dpkg -i openvpnasdebpack.deb

    From: http://openvpn.net/index.php/access-server/docs/quick-start-guide.html.

  3. Thanks for your fast reply.
Being new to this, let’s clarify some things.

I installed vmware w/OpenVPN AS on my win7 laptop, is that incorrect?
If incorrect where should Ubuntu with vmware be installed? laptop or home server(HTPC)?

wmware with openVPN AS does run on my win7 laptop but to what extent I don’t know.

  4. @Icyman, Vmware with OpenVPN should be installed either on the HTPC (if it has enough horsepower) or another machine on the same local network as the HTPC. The VPN server MUST be accessible FROM the internet. After setting this up, you would then connect TO the VPN server VM remotely FROM a remote location such as an internet cafe or library or friends house USING your mobile device/laptop.

  5. @Daron, I got it all setup on my windows 8 home network system.
I’m currently stuck at the above situation you described.
HDHomeRun Setup finds all as it normally does but WMC still can not find the tuners. in setup, wmc can’t connect to the internet.

  6. @Icyman, I’m not totally apprised of your network or setup. There are many questions that need answered… (i.e. what is running win7 & win8, where is vmware player installed? Are you onsite when having these problems troubleshooting or at a remote location away from your htpc like at a friends house, etc). I think you might have more help in the hdhomerun forums at this point as it sounds like you might have it working somewhat. The troubleshooting steps on this blog should help though. Good luck.

  7. @Daron, Problem solved. It works! I will post my steps your original part 2 guide.
